You cant just come to a Chinese restaurant and order fake Chinese beef, chicken dish like General Tso, teriyaki. You have to know what's authentic. For example, you should try steamed whole tilapia fish with scallion and ginger. The name might be odd, but this is one of the best Chinese dishes. You should also try Chinese style lobster. The lobster with scallion and ginger or lobster with pepper and salt are both delicious! So much better than the American boiled ones! Had several meals here, this is the best meal!

Chinese cuisine is destroyed by this place. Location: downtown bar harbor close to poorboy. The indoor decoration is poor but still integrates some chinese culture. Looks less sanitized and dirty, I was not sure if this is the place to eat. But my parents insisted that they could no longer handle American food, I have to start my eat-shit series 4 on this road trip. Food: I like some of the dishes, like fish, like eggplants. But the tofu is totally disappointed. Service: Quote from my mother - if you treat people with smiling face, they will at least not offend you. Overall: 2.5.

After coming to Bar Harbor for so many years and hearing my husband say he would like to try that restaurant just once, I finally relented. ( I am not a fan of Chinese food). Service was prompt and helpful. The restaurant needs a lot of interior work so there is definitely not a New England feel when you go inside. The food was decent though. We had lobster cantonese and tung tung scallops, both with wonderfully light but distinct sauces and the shrimp fried rice was great. Beware of the hot mustard though....brutally hot so use sparingly. Would detract another star for lack of any ambiance, but the food was really pretty good.

Not only was the food subpar, the waitress we had greeted us with sneers and a bad attitude. I then had to stare wide-eyed as she screamed at my mother for "asking for straws at the wrong time -- I'm taking your order" before giving my grandparents the most hateful glare I've ever seen.

terrible service and bad environment! no AC at all when you have a lunch over 85 degree... they won't open the AC when i asked her twice... pool service ...never come back again ..

Wasn't expecting much from a Chinese restaurant in Bar Harbor. Had lunch here and food was surprisingly decent. Nice outdoor seating. I would come back next time in Bar Harbor.

The food was bland. After a meal I felt like I I've eat nothing. Even though this place is only one dollar sign if you only want to grab a quick meal, I would never come back and waste my money here.

I can't say I will come again. I ordered lobster roll, eggplant with garlic sauce and big size chicken wing (14 wings) to go. When I opened up the package, there were only 6 wings! The lobster roll is like Vietnam style with little lobster meat, full of cucumber and lettuce! I knew that the lobster is cheap as $7 on the menu, but this one can't worth more than $3! I really don't like this place.

We ordered one lobster and one crab in ginger and scallion style, excellent. If you are not a Chinese, you probably never ordered the lobster in a Chinese restaurant, please try it in ginger and scallion, they break the lobster into pieces, all the flavor into the meat, taste in a heaven, you will not regret it, much better than steamed, soaked in butter kind, healthier too, even looks like have more salt. As a picky Chinese foodie, I do not think they cook as good as places in New Jersey. But the seafood is much fresher. Besides little oil with ginger, then put lobster in, stir fry for a minute or two, some cooking wine, then add soy sauce, water, cook for about 5-10 minutes, last add some sugar and scallions, it is done. As long as it is fresh seafood, it is zero chance failed dish. One request to the business owner, I wish there are more green vegetable choice on the menu.

Lobster with ginger and scallion was delicious as always. Don't get the lobster fried rice as there is hardly any lobster in this.

  • Erin Y.

I agree with previous reviewers who say you shouldn't eat here unless you are seriously craving a soy sauce fix. The food here doesn't really taste like Chinese food. Obviously being the only Chinese restaurant, without competition, this place can stay alive regardless how terrible the food tastes. We had ma po tofu that had more vegetables than tofu and was not spicy at all. It also did not taste like mapo tofu and how it should be cooked. We also had braised eggplant that was sickeningly sweet and had large chunks of pork. I think they might have used ketchup as the sauce base. Some of the pork were just not chewable. The food came with rice, it was a very small portion of rice, maybe equivalent to one bowl. We asked for additional white rice, and it cost $1.50. Ridiculously expensive for that tiny little bit of white rice. The staff was friendly and helpful. That's about the only good thing here.

Yes, this Chinese restaurant has lots of old school, non authentic Chinese food but they also have some very good authentic dishes and some of the classic resturant favorites like wanton soup and egg rolls are excellent. If you're looking for Lobster in Bar Harbor (and isnt everyone?) the ginger scallion Wok fried Lobster is really outstanding and the aforementioned wanton soup is some of the best I've ever had and the portion, for the price, is a great value! I recently tried the Ma PO (sp?) tofu and pork, on the recommendation of a friend, and it was really yummy.

Most people don't travel to Bar Harbor to eat Chinese food. But, if you start getting tired of even seeing the word "lobster," and don't care to wait 45 minutes to dine at a seafood restaurant or pub, China Joy could be your salvation. The place looks dumpy and plain, the young waitresses are constantly running to and from the kitchen, and everyone seems harried. On the night we came, service was extremely slow because of a big party in the outdoor dining section. But, once we got our food, it was well worth the wait. Everything - the steamed dumplings, noodles, seafood mix, and moo shu pork, was excellent. And, the manager was extremely apologetic about the delay caused by the party. My family and I would go again. We have eaten at many Chinese restaurants throughout the country and this one is well above average overall.

Omg! It was so good! We live in ny where the Chinese food is great, and this is RIGHT up there with home. Def recommend china joy.

  • Ginger C.

China Joy was not so joyous. After a few days of rich lobster/crab meals, we were really in need for an Asian food fix. We found China Joy in one of the Bar Harbor publications advertised as the only "Chinese restaurant on Mount Desert Island" We considered ourselves either lucky or forewarned. When the food came out so-so and greasy, we weren't surprised all. Given we are from NYC, home of three major Chinatowns-- it's always the competition that drives up the quality of food and service anyway. Would it be fair to hold Bar Harbor's China Joy to the same high standards? Seriously, it can't be easy to get fresh Asian produce in the middle of Acadia, right? And then again, are people really going to Bar Harbor for the chow mein? However, being the one and only Chinese restaurant gives them every reason to improve their recipes and service and start representing! 80% of the people we vacationed with at Bar Harbor were New Yorkers. I'd say improve your lackluster menu by creating one, kick-ass signature dish, like lobster fried rice or soup buns!

Excellent for our Chinese palate. Would recommend it to all who seek authentic Chinese food with a local flair. We got the garlic ginger lobster which was very tasty. Would definitely go back.

Hella scary. Hella dirty. And, saw a chef picking the nose... NOT GOOD!!!!! Run away... Derek S is a straight bot or a liar...

As a Chinese, the lobster's much better here than boiled or baked stuff inside lobster elsewhere. So if you'd like try other ways of cooking lobster in Bar Harbor, it's a place you might come. The waitress's friendly also.

I don't eve care about the service but this place was really dirty. Was on vacation in Bar Harbor and really wanted to have some Chinese food. Saw bad review but still neglected it and said whatever and tried it and I got what I deserved. The worst part was I was really hungry too blahhhhh. For me authentic or American style Chinese food really does not matter. However, there was flies everywhere and a big bee came and sat on my food. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. First experience can leave a bad remark or a very good remark. For me it was on the bad bad side. Service , food and cleanliness: all three were bad. Maybe someone else had a better experience than me but if you had a bad experience please let people know so that the next person that reads yelp will think a bit more than me or someone else , before going to this place.

Sloppy food, terrible service. A previous comment mentioned they give better service if you spoke Chinese. Not true, I ordered in Chinese and still got poor service. Actually, the worst service I've ever gotten in ANY restaurant. Price was expensive for the amount you get. The food seemed like it was just thrown into the wok and slopped onto a plate. They charge for extra rice. And beware there is a Mandatory 15% tip already added to your bill. If you're in Bar Harbor, steer clear of this place!

  • Marissa B.

Not the best Chinese food I ever had, but, not completely terrible either. I ordered the Bacon Shrimp. The prawns were cooked perfectly and were a good size, but, the bacon part was overcooked-burnt on some of the shrimp and the dish lacked flavor. The wine sauce they were served in seemed to be lacking something. Other than that, the outdoor area was nice and so was our waitress. Fast service.

Order off the seasonal menu. The regular menu is just that, regular, and nothing special. The home made dumplings and the lobster Szechuan were amazing. Not the greatest decor, but good food.

The best Chinese food in Bar Harbor! ...that was a joke. But seriously, yes, it's pretty good, much better than China Hill in nearby Ellsworth for sure. The prices are very reasonable (especially if you're there for their Sunday buffet, if you're into that sort of thing) and the food is always well prepared. The service is exceptional and the family that runs it is extremely friendly and very gracious hosts. If you go there with any regularity, you will notice this (and so will they). As some have mentioned, yes, the portions are huge, especially for how much you pay (doing their part to make Americans fatter, one egg roll at a time, heh) and the selection is pretty good as well. The only complaint I have is that the overall atmosphere of the place aesthetically leaves a bit to be desired (in my opinion) but you will learn to overlook it. Very affordable, well done, and friendly staff, not to mention central to everything. What more could you want?

Service was terrible. We waited over 10 min just to get menus. They had only one waitperson and she acted like if you didn't speak Chinese, you were not getting served. We ordered stir fried crabs, cantonese lobster and some spring rolls. The crabs were supposed to have ginger and scallion sauce, they came with black pepper sauce. We we complained, they just looked at us with that "deer in the headlights" look. The quality of the food is not that bad but if since Bar Harbor is known for lobster, they try to present themselves as if they specialize in lobster chinese dishes. Our cantonese lobster was filled with pork and just a few bits of lobster. Overall, a huge disappointment.

Very good Chinese in a rather unexpected place. This place has been here for years and they are doing a lot right. ASK FOR THE 'ASIAN' MENU!

The food is not that bad. Its better than just ok. The menu has quite a wide variety of dishes. They have a very affordable lunch specials starting from as low as $4.95. I had the meat chow mien which turns out to be fried rice with fried bean sprouts/ veg / beef on the side. Pretty nice. Doesn't taste like bad Chinese food that I've had out of California. We also had the Teriyaki chicken & chicken wings. It came with choice of fried rice / white rice. The teriyaki chicken was basically flat white meat on a stick. Two sticks, pretty big chunks. The two chicken wings were very nicely roasted. More than a just-pleasant meal. I will prob go back there for lunch when I am in the area. The food is more than just edible. its not too bad. Worth a try if you would like to have some chinese food.

I like this place a lot. It has entirely decent Chinese food. The portions are huge, the price is reasonable, and the service has always been friendly. I grew up in New York City and ate Chinese food almost once a week. So I have a taste for kinda mediocre Americanized Chinese food. Most of the Chinese places in Maine are really pretty bad. But China Joy is just fine. It's not gourmet Chinese by any stretch of the imagination. But I've found it to be reliable and solid. It satisfies my craving for a NYC-style plate of Chinese food. I often go here when I'm working late and find myself really hungry---too hungry to cook for myself. So I head to China Joy and get a plate of spicy tofu or mu shu veggies and feel satisfied. If you're looking for fine dining or the sort of cuisine you'd get in Chinatown or Beijing, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for pretty good American-style Chinese at a good price, China Joy is a good bet.

When you are sick of paying $30 for freaking lobster then you come here. The food was great and the price is fair.

  • Brandon X.

The food is ok. But be prepared to wait at least 40 minutes to get your food. And there was only one waitress in the restaurant so you need to wait patiently.

  • Martin N.

Overall good. We had dumplings, summer rolls, hot and sour soup, seafood noodle soup. Everything was spiced well and not greasy. Prices are good and serving sizes were more than adequate. Friendly service. Run of the mill looking decor. No complaints. Better Chinese food than we can get in Vermont.

  • Bin J.

Overall pretty bad. The lobster in ginger and scallion style doesn't taste fresh and the crab taste bitter for some random reason. The waitress lies about the lobster size too. She said it was at least 1and 3/4lb. but obviously it was the smallest lobster with the smallest claws I had ever seen in Maine. The rice in House Fried Rice was dry and hard and the environment was not very good either. This is probably not the best place to get your Chinese food.

  • Julia C. C.

Don't order noodle soup if you are an noodle soup love rand you are an Asian. Fry noodle or rice maybe a better choice for you. The price was ok, to have eating there, I will rather go have a lobster somewhere near the bay

Food is okay, but is nothing unique about it. You would expect that being the only Chinese restaurant on Mount Desert Island, the restaurant should at least hold itself to a higher standard and stand out from other generic Chinese restaurants. The decor and atmosphere need improvement. This restaurant charges extra for little things (i.e. tea). My recommendation is order off the regular menu and take a break from your lobster feast while you're at Bar Harbor. My overall recommendation is: unless you are desperate for Chinese/Asian food during your stay at Bar Harbor, you can afford to skip China Joy and move on.

I just visited this place, and I got great service. I'm surprised by the other reviews about bad service. It is still off season, and there were only a few tables filled. The price was very reasonable, too. I got the wonton soup, and it was really, really good! It was snowing outside, and the wonton soup was exactly what I needed.

  • Sandy D.

We had lunch there and their prices are very reasonable. General Tao's was excellent and not too sweet. Needed a little hot spice though. Lemon chicken and the Pork Fried rice was fantastic. The egg rolls were some of the best we've ever had. Nice servers and owners.

  • Joshua L.

Food was so salty but was a generous portion. charged $3 for each extra rice. They only had two people serving, waited 10 min to get menu and another 10 min to get water and tea. and soup came out at the same time as main dish. The worst part was that they added 15% tip automatically to my bill. Outrageous. I guess they didn't really care since most tourists just eat and leave. but unfortunately this review wouldn't leave them so easily.

Pretty much what you'd expect out of a Chinese restaurant. Service was a touch slow and the atmosphere was a bit low-effort.

  • DEREK S.

I'm giving this place for four stars because when it comes to Asian food, especially basic Chinese food, there is an inverse proportional effect of the quality directly correlated with the distance from the largest Asian community near it. So with that theorom factored in, this place deserves some respect. I go in after walking around on my short three day stop over here. I did'nt really feel like seafood, plus the place was kind of quiet and I felt more comfortable eating alone here then a more busier place. I ordered the Szechuen Beef and asked for it to be combined with the Broccolli and Beancurd dish. They charged me an additional two bucks for this off the menu rice combo, but when they brought out the dish they had given me the fried rice instead of the white rice. But they did give me additional white rice free of charge. For the money, the food was a very good value. Not too salty, portions were decent and the service was acceptable. Again if this place were to be dropped into NYC, or Boston, or San Fran, it would have to serve a whole different level of food.

  • Ron W.

honestly - the best chinese food ive ever had! their prices are affordable and the portions generous. The egg roll, crab rangoon, general tso chicken, chicken lo mein and fried rice are all the best ive seriously ever had. Its a place I have to stop at several times whenever I'm in Bar Harbor.

  • Anna K.

The food was mediocre at best! If you must eat chinese, wait until you get to the mainland.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
